Brand identity is the perception of your product or service that distinguishes it from the competition. Think character and charisma! Know where to begin? I can help.
At the start of every project, I assign “homework” to my clients. This is a two-part questionnaire that helps to define and develop your brand identity. The answers are valuable in clearly describing the personality and goals of your business. This gives us a basis for making decisions and implementing a plan. At a minimum, it starts the conversation.
Grab a cup of coffee. Let’s begin. Part 1 of your homework is to define your brand.
Identify skills, resources and strengths
Identify your unique ability as an entrepreneur. Be conscious of your challenges and areas for improvement.Develop a mission statement
Define the essential purpose or core mission of your company. Example: a daycare facility = to support community by giving families peace of mind and children security through quality childcare.Establish a company vision
Define the tangible outcome you intend to create. This relates to scale, fame and fortune. Example: Ford = A car in every garage.Determine core values
Create a values statement that expresses the guiding principles at the heart of the company. These reflect the culture, spirit and character of your business. Live by them.Define the target audience
Who are they? What are their needs, values and interests? Where can you reach them? Work with the cultural, economic and demographic characteristics of your audience.Create company messages
Define: What you do, where you do it, who you do it for, how you do it, who you are, your key values, your personality, plus brand features and benefits.
Your completed homework can be used to develop the design and communications strategy of your product or service. In Part 2 of the homework, we delve into specific brand messages.
